PEREGRINE FALCON PATIENT: This Peregrine Falcon arrived at our hospital on Oct. 28 after it was found sitting on a trash can on the deck of the Berkeley Tennis Club not moving or flying away. Our hospital team stabilized the adult male bird, which was sporting a federal band. Soon after, our team learned that the falcon was none other than Grinnell, who with his partner, Annie, is one of the Cal Falcons that famously nests in the UC Berkeley Campanile tower. Grinnell has had radiographs, minor surgery to close a wound on his left wing, and is receiving supportive care in our hospital for what the team believes was a possible altercation or territory fight with another Peregrine Falcon. He is now eating and gaining weight as he begins his journey back to the wild.

GRINNELL UPDATE: Grinnell the Peregrine Falcon continues to prepare for his return to the wild. His injuries are healing well and he was sent to homecare on Tuesday, Nov. 9 with a volunteer species manager and falcon expert who will monitor his progress as he builds up strength. Our veterinary team plans to recheck Grinnell next week and possibly decide at that point whether he's ready to go back to the wild.
